Liquor Liability Insurance

Hospitality Insurance Group is an admitted insurance company offering commercial property, general liability, liquor liability, assault and battery, and excess liability insurance coverage to businesses that serve or sell liquor.

Hospitality Mutual Insurance Company (HMIC) is a private, mutually owned insurance company based in Massachusetts. In 2010, HMIC expanded its operations and formed Hospitality Insurance Company (HIC), which allowed them to expand the operation from Massachusetts to New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

In 2011, Hospitality Insurance Company appointed the Rhode Island Association of Insurance Agents (RIAIA) as an aggregator to make this market available to the members who do not qualify for a direct appointment. Participation is subject to review and approval, and also requires a signed RIAIA broker’s agreement.

  • Maximum limits of $1 million per person/$1 million per occurrence/$2 million aggregate
  • Pays first dollar defense – no deductibles and unlimited reimbursement for attorney’s fees.
  • Audited on an annual basis – return premium or additional premium billed based on results
  • Full Assault & Battery coverage is automatically included with HIC’s policy up to the full policy limits – no sub-limits or deductibles. General liability A&B is available as a buyback endorsement.
  • Additional Insureds can be added for $50 dollars each. There is also as option for a blanket additional insured for $250.  AI’s cannot be involved with serving, selling or distributing alcohol in any way.
  • Temporary Event Coverage is available for one day or mulitple day events that include alcohol
  • Clients who qualify for preferred liquor rates are eligible for substantially reduced premiums with additional savings for establishments that purchases package policies and/or general liability and liquor liability coverage.
  • Hospitality Insurance Company will accept competitors’ applications.

  • ACORD 126 GL application accepted
  • Hired & Non owned available to insured with NO delivery or valet parking
  • Will consider GL for seasonal properties
  • Temporary Event Coverage – one day or multiple events
  • Additional Insured can be added for $75. ​Must provide explanation of interest.
  • Discounts available when both liquor liability and general liability are purchased from HIC

  • Business Income– HIC does not offer ALS, must indicate limits and coinsurance, monthly limitation or maximum period of indemnity
  • Mixed Occupancies – habitational – must have interconnected, hardwired smoke detectors throughout entire building
  • ACORD 140 application accepted and ACCORD Restaurant Supplement (if HIC LL application is not completed)
  • Expanded property damage coverage
  • Equipment Breakdown is not available in Rhode Island.

Property Enhancement Endorsement (optional coverage for $500)

Excess Liability Coverage

  • HIC offers an Excess Liability policy that extends the Liquor Liability occurrence limit, the General Liability occurrence limit, and the optional A&B occurrence limit.
  • Written on Hospitality Insurance Group’s admitted paper
  • Must have both the Liquor Liability and the General Liability coverage with HIC
  • Excess will only sit over LL & GL
  • ACORD Application accepted

​Temporary Events Coverage:

  • Periods of less than one day shall be rated as if they constituted one full day.
  • HIC offers one day liquor liability and general liability temporary event policies.
  • Offers annual temporary events policies for entities that host multiple special events throughout the year.
  • Rates are determined by the number of people attending each event. For events of more than one day, the premium shall be calculated based upon the number of attendees for each separate day.

For New and Renewal Business:​​

  1. You must be a member of IIARI with a completed Broker’s Agreement.
  2. Fax or email your completed application(s) to Helen Collins at hcollins@iiari.com.
  3. We will contact you for additional information or send a quote.  Hospitality Insurance Company requires at least a 48 hour turnaround time.​
  4. To bind coverage:
    • A formal request must be made.​
    • All “subject to” requirements must be met and sent along with signed applications and copy of payment or finance agreement.
    • Send original payment to Hospitality Insurance Company, 95A Turnpike Road, Westborough, MA 01581​​
  5. The policy will be issued and forwarded upon receipt of payment.

​​​​​Preferred Liquor Liability

  • For clients with liquor sales under 60% and a three-year loss ratio under 55%

Standard Liquor Liability

  • For clients with liquor sales between 60-100%, with a three-year loss ratio under 55%; they must also have participated in an approved alcohol-server training program.

Modified Liquor Liability

  • For clients who do not qualify for the “preferred” or “modified” programs.

  • Package Discount if GL & LL are written together.
  • 10% discount for establishment that close by 8 p.m.
  • 20% Liquor Liability discount if insured is a member of Rhode Island Hospitality Association
  • 20% Fine Dining Credit*

  • 10% discount for those with 100% of managers and 75% of servers that have participated in an approved alcohol-training progra
  • 50% off assault and battery if 100% of managers and 75% of servers participate in an approved security training program.
